Health study still 'priority' despite change of government

There's optimism the new Doug Ford government will honour a previous Liberal commitment to help fund a comprehensive health study in Sarnia-Lambton.

Anne Marie Gillis, the chair of the former Lambton Community Health Study, met Tuesday with Environment, Conservation and Parks Minister Rod Phillips.

Gillis said she was told the health study, estimated to cost $5 million, is a priority for the new Progressive Conservative government.

"I did press him with regards to the previous government and the ministry, particularly that had taken this upon themselves to do,and he said when they were in the change of government, that the Lambton Community Health Study was a high priority for the previous ministry and it is a high priority for them," said Gillis.

The study is to examine the impact the area's petrochemical industry has on the health of local residents.

Gillis said Phillips also met with Aamjiwnaang Chief Chris Plain and staff, the Sarnia-Lambton Environmental Association, and various local industry leaders.
