Lambton Public Health is reporting the first lab-confirmed human case of West Nile virus this year.
West Nile virus was previously established in the area through local surveillance efforts. Mosquito pools in Wyoming and Corunna and a crow in Sarnia tested positive earlier this season.
There have been 54 human cases reported in Ontario.
The virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito.
We're advised to reduce our risk of exposure by taking precautions to avoid mosquitos and bites, and by removing or reducing areas of standing water during fall clean-up.
The majority of people infected with the virus do not get sick. Those that do, usually experience mild flu-like symptoms like fever, headache, skin rash or muscle aches.
Less than 1 per cent of people infected with the virus become seriously ill.
