Jump in real estate listings encouraging

The Sarnia-Lambton Real Estate Board is encouraged by a 14 per cent jump in listings last month.

President Steve Park said while the number of sales for the month were down almost nine per cent at 170, dollar volume was up 11 per cent at $51-million, a 10-year high for the month of August.

He said he thinks the hot weather was a factor and people were too busy enjoying the summer break to look for houses.

"The open houses have been poorly attended for the month of August, and also the calls have been down," said Park. "I think because we had such a hot and wet July, everybody put off either going away or doing something and the calls just didn't come in. Even when we called to show houses, people weren't interested in seeing them or showing them."

The average sale price so far this year is just over $310,000, almost $50,000 higher than the average a year ago.

The highest number of residential sales was 18 in the $240,000 to $260,000 price range.

There are currently 226 active listings in the MLS system with 218 of those being single family homes,193 of which were new in August.
