Drugs, Weapon Seized In Traffic Stop

Two local men face drug and weapons charges following a traffic stop Wednesday.

Sarnia police say, at about 11:40am, an officer saw a vehicle being driven by an individual who is prohibited from driving Canada-wide.

A passenger stepped out of the car and asked the officer to retrieve a black bag from the rear of the vehicle that belonged to him. The officer saw drug paraphernalia and a clear plastic baggy with suspected methamphetamine in the partially open bag.

Police say further drugs were found in a personal search, and a taser-like weapon was discovered in the car under the seat. Both occupants of the vehicle were searched further at the police station.

Police say the total street value of the drugs seized is about $2,400.

Curtis Edward McBean, 29, of Lambton County, is now charged with possession of an unauthorized weapon, driving while disqualified, and drug possession.

Charges against Richard Hanson-Smith, 32, of Sarnia include possession of heroin and methamphetamine for the purpose of trafficking and possession of an unauthorized weapon.

McBean appeared in court and was released while Hanson-Smith remained in custody pending a bail hearing.
