History Unveiled At Hillsdale Cemetary Tours

Tickets are now on sale for one of the most unique fundraisers in Lambton County.

The Hillsdale Cemetery Tour is set for September 15.

Alanna Frew is a co-op student with the Petrolia Heritage Committee.

She says $15 tickets are available at the Victoria Playhouse box office. Guided tours will begin every 15 minutes. Actors will be dressed in period costumes and give you a glimpse into that person's life at specific stops. Proceeds will go towards monument restoration in the cemetery.

"This year we are updating and cleaning up the Kirkpatrick-Montgomery Mausoleum, says Frew. "It's kind of ironic because there was a lot of ivy on the mausoleum and this year when the Heritage Committee decided to do it, all the ivy died!"

A stone will also be placed for Florence "Flossy" Stone.

"She was Petrolia's and Western Ontario's first female councillor," says Frew. "She opened one of Petrolia's first old aged homes and bought plots for residents who couldn't afford them. Ironically, she doesn't have a plot of her own so we are using past proceeds to place a stone in her honour at one of the plots that she owns."

The tour involves a fair amount of walking on uneven terrain.
