Sarnia Rises On Best Places List

Sarnia's ranking among the best cities to live in Canada has risen significantly from last year.

The city is placed 150th in MoneySense Magazine's-Canada's Best Places To Live 2018, up from 307th a year ago.

The online magazine gathered information on 415 cities across Canada, ranking them based on crime, wealth and economy, weather and affordability.

Population growth, taxes, commute, access to health care, amenities and culture are other factors considered.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley says the dramatic jump is a positive sign for the community.

"In the past, we've questioned this list, lists are always fun to debate, whether it's about communities, or music, or sports," says Bradley. "But, we had always questioned how we would be lower when we looked at the housing prices -- how low they were. We looked at the climate issues, which are much better than many communities in Canada. We looked at all the amenities, from the beaches to the parks and all those things. I find it very encouraging and it's a huge jump to make."

St. Clair Township is ranked 171st on the list, up from 241st in 2017.

Lambton Shores is up 80 points over last year at 259th on this year's list.

Oakville, Ontario ranks as the top city in the country, followed by Ottawa and Russell, Ontario.
