Tropical Air Mass Brings Much Needed Rain

Environment Canada received reports indicating the Courtright area got over three inches of rain in heavy thunderstorms Monday night into Tuesday morning.

Figures released Wednesday by the weather agency show 81.8 mm (3.2 inch) fell in Courtright, 50 mm (2 inch) in Wallaceburg and 63.6 mm (2.5 inch) in Goderich.

Various areas across the province had received more than two inches of rain with the highest total of 91.5 mm (3.6 inch) being recorded in Ottawa as of 2pm Wednesday.

Stittsville got 83.1 mm.

The rain, from a warm and very moist tropical air mass streaming northward from the Bahamas, was a godsend for parts of the province suffering from drought-like conditions that have been threatening farm crops.

Cooler, drier air is forecast heading into the weekend with more locally heavy rain and damaging wind gusts possible ahead of a cold front Thursday.
