Honeymooners On Seniors Cruise

Sunny skies and a cool northerly breeze greeted seniors at the Sarnia waterfront Monday.

For Rose Marie and Milford Heimbecker, the 40th annual seniors cruise on the St. Clair River was extra special.

The couple, from Paris, Ontario, were celebrating their honeymoon after being married last Thursday.

"It was just wonderful, nice to see the little ducklings out there," said Rose Marie.

It was the first time the Heimbeckers have been on Sarnia's popular cruise, which was started by longtime CHOK Hotline host Peter Henderson.

Lambton Elderly Outreach (LEO) stepped up to keep the event afloat this year after organizer Marni Thomas had to step aside for health reasons.

CEO Bill Yurchuk said everything was going pretty smoothly, thanks to the help of many volunteers.

"I'm working very closely with Steeves and Rozema, they play such a huge role in this event and have been involved for the last seven or eight years, so they really have a handle of what happens on the ground," said Yurchuk. "For me, I'm trying to really learn and understand [the event] and try to make it even better for next year."

Many seniors expressed how thankful they were that the event continued, including Martha Hall of Sarnia, who says she looks forward to it.

"Every year," said Hall. "It's amazing the amount of volunteers who are here to help. That's very special. It's very nice what they do for the community."

As many as 2,000 seniors have been known to make their way down to the Front St. dock each year, to enjoy a free ride aboard the Duc D'Orleans, some food and live music.
