Significant Donation To Petrolia Rec Centre

The grand reopening of Petrolia's Greenwood Recreation Centre Friday included word of a significant donation from Waste Management.

It was announced that the company has contributed $250,000 to the centre.

Waste Management has been a long-time partner of the town and currently holds the contract for waste and recycling collection and operates the compost depot.

Petrolia Mayor John McCharles says no decision has been made on how the money will be spent.

"I don't think there's a rush to spend this money but I think after some deep thought with staff and with council we'll come up with a few ideas and maybe float them around to the public and see where it comes out," he says.

Last year the Ontario 150 Community Capital Program contributed $274,500 to the recreation centre for renovations.

The repairs included new rink boards, bathroom upgrades, safety-netting, an improved press box and audio equipment, and better Wi-Fi Internet.

There's also new lobby seating, new flooring and a new score clock courtesy of Bluewater Power.

The town's contribution is only $21,000.
