A couple of people were taken to Bluewater Health for observation following a fire in the Cardiff Acres area Thursday morning.
Sarnia Fire and Rescue responded from three stations to the 400-block of Cardiff Place at around 9am and arrived to see flames and heavy smoke coming from the structure.
Public Education Officer Mike Otis says a mother and four children were alerted by working smoke alarms and were out of the home when they got there.
"Due to a quick response, we were able to contain it to the basement, actually contain it to a very small area," says Otis. "If it were to burn any longer, it would have got out of control really fast."
Otis says those transported to hospital by EMS were taken as a precaution due to the smoke.
He says the cause was found to be clothes piled too close to a gas-fired hot water heater.
A damage estimate was not immediately available.
