Pot Production To Begin At High Park Farms

The mayor of Enniskillen Township is pleased to hear the $30-million medical marijuana facility in his community will start growing plants soon.

High Park Farms, a new subsidiary of Tilray Inc., received its federal license from Health Canada to cultivate medical marijuana this week.

"I think it will be full steam ahead now," says Mayor Kevin Marriott.

He says the company faced some delays when converting its facility, the former Enniskillen Pepper Company.

"Originally they wanted to have plants in a greenhouse by January, so it's three or four months behind, but it's still an acceptable delay for them," says Marriott.

The 100-acre Lasalle Line property, which includes 13 acres of greenhouse space, will be heavily regulated by the federal department.

High Park Farms will begin cultivating cannabis plants in its greenhouse next week and anticipates its first harvest in June. The plants will be processed at a $10-million facility being built in London.

The initial Enniskillen operation will employ about 50 people, with hundreds more expected once the company reaches peak production.

It's expected recreational marijuana use will become legal in Canada July 1.
