CANstruction Event Benefits Inn Of The Good Shepherd

Sarnia's seventh annual CANstruction event is being held this weekend inside of Lambton Mall.

Over its six years, the fundraiser has generated 180,000 lbs of food and nearly $90,000 for the Inn of the Good Shepherd.

This year, 13 teams made up of local industry, schools, and businesses, are being challenged to build a structure that depicts a Canadian innovation.

Inn Executive Director Myles Vanni says it's always a great help for the food bank, adding the goal this year is 40,000 lbs.

"It's pretty intricate in terms of the designs of the structures and the size and the colour of the cans," says Vanni. "So, there's a huge variety of food which is really one of the good benefits of the CANstruction event. We get everything from peanut butter to soups, to condiments. It really gives us a good selection for the folks using the food bank."

Teams will begin making their creations at 8:30am on Saturday, with awards being handed out at 1pm Sunday at the food court.

The structures will be on display until May 1, and residents will have the chance to vote for their favourites.

The Peoples' Choice Award will be presented on April 29.
