Organ Donors On The Rise Since Humboldt Tragedy

A tragedy in Saskatchewan has spurred an increase in organ donors, including in Sarnia where the donor rate is already above the provincial average.

Ontario's Trillium Gift of Life Network says it's already seen a spike in donors since the horrific bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team.

CEO Ronnie Gavsie says many donors came forward immediately following Friday's crash.

"On a Sunday, we might see about 40 or 60 registrations," says Gavsie. "On April 8, we saw 182 and on April 9 it went up close to 400."

Defenceman Logan Boulet was one of 15 people killed and had signed up to be a donor. He saved six lives by donating organs including his heart and lungs.

The donor rate in Sarnia is at 49%, compared to the provincial average of 32%.

Gavsie stresses that anyone who signs up must have family consent.
