The Kitchener Rangers took a 1-0 series lead Friday night with a 4-2 win over the Sarnia Sting.
The teams were tied at one a piece entering the final period, but two Ranger power play goals 21 seconds apart helped lift Kitchener to the game one win.
The Stings Michael Pezzetta was issued a 5 minute major penalty and a game misconduct for charging Rangers forward Adam Mascherin at the end of the second. That lead to the two Kitchener power play goals.
Sting forward Jordan Ernst was also ejected from the game midway through the second period for making a derogatory remark.
Theo Calvas and Ryan McGregor each scored for Sarnia and goaltender Justin Fazio made 36 saves in the loss.
Calvas says his team needs to stop taking penalties.
"I think we need to stay a little bit more disciplined. If we play 5 on 5, I think we'll be fine," he says. "We were pretty upset and everyone was fired up after the game when you lose like that. We just need to bring that same emotion for the start of the next game."
Sarnia went 0 for 5 on the power play in game one and are now 0 for 25 with the man advantage in the postseason.
