Sarnia's beloved seniors cruise on the St. Clair River has been thrown a lifeline.
Lambton Elderly Outreach (LEO) is keeping the popular yearly event afloat after organizer Marni Thomas had to step down because of health issues.
CEO Bill Yurchuk says they hope to continue to work with a valuable team of volunteers and sponsors.
"I spoke to some friends who would be willing to assist me in the community, and was able to obtain some of that assistance ahead of time," says Yurchuk. "After meeting with the organizer, she gave me the blessing and was very, very happy that we're going to carry it on."
Yurchuk welcomes any new volunteers or sponsors who want to help with the event.
"Of course we would love to work with the people who were involved in the past, because they knew it best and can help us run it to the same level that it was run in the past," he says. "Obviously, we're still looking for new sponsorship to make it better and stronger for our seniors, to give them an experience in the summer that they may not normally receive."
The event has seen up to 2,000 seniors enjoy a free ride on the Duc D'Orleans on the last Monday in June and Yurchuk says that's the date they're aiming for this year.
The cruise was started 40 years ago by former CHOK Hotline host, the late Peter Henderson.
