Cleanup Imminent At Davis St. Home

The City of Sarnia is prepared to step in if a property owner fails to clean up the site of an unoccupied Davis St. home.

The boarded up home garnered a lot of attention after a video of the property covered in refuse, including improperly disposed of needles, was posted on social media.

Bylaw Enforcement Supervisor Adam MacDonald says an order was issued in late March for cleanup.

"The way it works for us is, we place an order and we have to follow legal timelines as far as when we can come back and re-inspect the property to ensure that the owner has complied," says MacDonald. "If the owner has not complied by the time that order comes due, staff will then hire a company to go in, we will do the remedial work and remove all the items on site, which will eventually get billed back to the property owner."

MacDonald says lot maintenance complaints are fairly regular in regards to garbage and debris cleanups, as well as property standards complaints.

Fines for failing to comply with the city's property standards bylaws are roughly $275.
