Water levels in Bright's Grove will be a little lower this summer thanks to an erosion-hampering wall currently being installed.
The first phase of the project on the Lake Huron shoreline between Kenwick St and Lakeshore Rd should be complete in late April.
Director of Water Resources Girish Sankar says it's not clear when or if the second phase will begin.
"The work is very much based on funding availability " he says. "So moving forward we've already applied for funding the second phase of the work to the provincial government and it's a position that the city of Sarnia will have to take based on the results of the funding."
The current phase of the project covers a 40-metre stretch of the roughly 600-metre-long shoreline. It's a $600,000 job with half the cost being covered by the city and half by a Ministry of Natural Resources grant.
Sankar believes this is a nice first step to help with erosion levels, but he says there's still lots of work that needs to be done before the shoreline is safe from extreme weather events.
Since 2012 the shoreline has seen a roughly three to five metre increase in water levels.
