Sarnia police are working to establish a more permanent training facility.
The Sarnia Police Services Board agreed Wednesday morning to ask city council to authorize the signing of a lease agreement for space at Lambton Mall.
Training Officer Constable Sean Osborne says space north of Pet Value would facilitate educational, defensive and scenario-type training.
He says in the past they have used the SCITS building, the old customs building and other vacant spaces, highlighting the need for a more dedicated facility.
"Unfortunately in some of those locations there was no washroom facilities, there was no heat, no hydro, there were hazards in the space that we had to be conscious of," says Osborne. "So, from an environmental perspective, they weren't always the best spot for us to use."
The cost of a five-year lease is $152,500 and requires city council approval.
It's expected council will consider the recommendation at its April 16 meeting.
