When life hands you lemons, make lemonade.
That's the attitude in Warwick Township.
The municipality is working with the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership on a plan to capitalize on Waste Management's Twin Creeks Landfill location.
Mayor Todd Case says they'll get up to $20,000 from the Ontario Rural Economic Development program to study the possibility of a waste and recycling cluster.
"The hope is that a facility could be created in the future that would deal with recycling products that would, in turn, create jobs and opportunities in our community," says Case. "The other positive in being close to that landfill is that even with recycling, there's always waste, so the waste that comes from that recycling would go back to the landfill. It makes a lot of sense. We could also recover some industrial products for recycling as well, which is not being done in the province right now. The idea is to find positives from being a host to a big landfill and make the most of it."
Case hopes a feasibility study wraps up in the next few months, outlining the possibility of creating an R & D recycling facility and incubator tied to recycling and manufacturing.
SLEP is also working with Lambton Shores which will receive up to $75,000 to create a brand and marketing strategy as the prime destination to visit, live and work along the Blue Water Coast in southwestern Ontario.
