After spring-like temperatures Saturday, winter returned Monday.
Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning afternoon that covered a swath of southern Ontario including Sarnia-Lambton and points east into Halton-Peel.
Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says a cold front and weak low became more active than originally thought, generating significant snowfall with amounts up to 15 cm (6 inches) possible before tapering off overnight.
He says northerly winds are a factor.
"I think there's a possibility of some input coming in from Lake Huron and that also may have factored into the decision to bump the special weather statement to a snowfall warning for parts of Lambton County," says Coulson.
The warning ended around 7pm, but Coulson says it's a taste of things to come.
"Unfortunately the longer range forecast I've been looking at both from Canada and American sources indicates February will be colder than normal with a fairly active storm track to set up around the lower Great Lakes. These types of systems we're getting today are something we will see more often in the coming weeks," said Coulson.
Motorists are reminded to adjust to changing conditions and slow down.
