Water Main Breaks In Extreme Cold

It may be late Friday night before a section of Christina St. is reopened to traffic.

A water main break near Nelson St. Friday morning turned Christina St. into a frozen lake.

City of Sarnia Operations Manager Bryan Prouse says the frigid temperatures are causing some problems as crews attempt to make repairs.

"We are having problems with the closure of some of the valves as you can well imagine many of them are frozen," says Prouse. "We've had to thaw them and hopefully they operate properly and we're having a bit of an issue with isolating the section of water main at the north end, so we're asking people to still avoid the area and we'll open the road as soon as possible."

He says there's also a lot of water and ice on the roads that will need to be cleared before the road is safe to travel on.

Christina Street is closed between Maxwell St. and Exmouth St., Nelson St. from Dundas St. to Front St. and Exmouth St. from Christina St. to Front St. are also closed.

There was also a major water main break overnight on London Rd. near the entrance to Lambton College.

Crews were on scene for much of this morning but have had to respond to other breaks. Prouse says crews will have to return to finish up repairs.
