Pop Can DNA Leads To Arrest

A can of pop left at the scene of a break-in helped Sarnia police track down a suspect.

Police were called to the 1400-block of Lakeshore Rd. around 10pm on October 22 after a family returning from a short walk was approached by an unknown man near their home who asked for a cigarette.

Constable John Sottosanti says following the odd encounter in the isolated location the family immediately went inside and checked surveillance video.

They saw the suspect had entered their garage and left behind a hammer and an open can of pop.

Constable Sottosanti says the items had been taken from a neighbour's garage, which had also been broken into.

The can was seized as evidence and DNA analysis matched a known offender in the data bank.

Eric Joseph Daamen, 25, was arrested December 16 for break and enter and breach of probation.

Police say he's since been released from custody, awaiting a future court date.
