It will change the face of palliative care in this country.
Sarnia-Lambton MP Marilyn Gladu's palliative care bill has received unanimous by approval from the Senate.
Gladu says the bill defines services and training requirements, and a plan to create consistent access for all Canadians.
"Well 70% of Canadians have no palliative care at all, and especially with the assisted dying legislation that was brought in, their special committee recommended that without good palliative care you really don't have a good choice," says Gladu.
Gladu says now that the Senate has unanimously supported the bill it was ascend into law.
"Within six months the Minister of Health has to meet with the provinces and then within a year that framework to get consistent access for all Canadians it goes into force," says Gladu. " I'm really looking forward to working with the new Health Minister on this and it's quite a rare thing for somebody from the opposition to actually get a private members bill passed so I'm very proud of that."
Gladu says the bill has been publicly endorsed by over 100 organizations including the Canadian Medical Association, Canadian Nurses Association, and Cancer Society and Kidney Foundation.
