Point Edward's mayor says its been a long time coming.
After sitting vacant for almost 30 years, the former Holmes Foundry property has now been listed for sale with an asking price of $7-million.
Mayor Bev Hand is looking forward to eventual development.
"The most important thing for us right now is to see the land cleared up," says Hand. "It would be a godsend to see those buildings gone and the blight eliminated. Beyond that, many things would be a good fit: apartment buildings, retail, anything that would bring more people to the community. We've spent years of frustration and worry, working with different groups, only to have things fall through. We've had to spend our own money on simple clean ups to try to make it look better."
Village officials say about five years of back taxes are owed on the 16 acre property bounded by the Hwy. 402, Exmouth St., Christina St.and Front St., with the eventual purchaser having to pay about $400,000 to Point Edward.
The property has sat idle because of a lengthy legal battle that was settled in November of 2017.
Chrysler closed the former engine block manufacturing site in 1988 and spent $7-million cleaning up the land, which, in 1989, was declared free of environmental contaminants.
It's not known if more stringent environmental regulations would impact the status of the land.
