Improving Seniors Care

Sarnia-based advocacy groups are trying to improve seniors healthcare in the community.

Four major concerns were identified following a public meeting with over 100 residents and stakeholders in September.

It was held by Navigating Seniors Care Lambton (NSCL), and Community Legal Assistance Sarnia.

NSCL Co-Founder Roger Gallaway says local access to prescription drugs is a big issue.

"An interesting scenario has emerged, whereby people living in long-term care residences in Sarnia must have their prescriptions filled at a drug store in Windsor," says Gallaway. "Only this Windsor drug store can, in fact, fill their prescriptions and they're shipped into town once a month."

"Apparently, there isn't a drug store in Sarnia that's qualified to fill these prescriptions. I found that quite peculiar."

Standard of care, safety, and the rules for those being discharged from hospital, are other key concerns.

The organizations are compiling a report and hope to meet with the LHIN, and local, provincial and federal politicians.
