Kitty Crisis Continues At Humane Society

The Sarnia and District Humane Society continues to cope with an influx of kittens.

Over 500 cats have been taken in by the shelter since late spring, and the number of kittens they've accepted in the past two months is up about 25% from last year.

To encourage more adoptions, Executive Director Donna Pyette says they've reduced the fee from $170 to $100.

"Hopefully that will help us out a little bit, but we just had an influx of kittens again in the last couple of days, so we'll have to wait and see," says Pyette.

While hundreds of cats and kittens have found new homes since they went public with their cat crisis earlier this month, Pyette says they keep coming through the door.

"We're out of cages and into crates. We do have an adopt-a-thon coming up at PetSmart this weekend. So hopefully we'll be able to get a lot of adoptions, but it's just been a crazy year this year," she says.

Pyette says the reduced adoption fee still covers the cost of vaccinations, deworming, flea treatment, microchip identification and getting cats spayed or neutered.
