Clearing The Way For Potential New NOVA Plant

NOVA Chemicals is clearing the way for possible construction of a new world-scale polyethylene plant in St. Clair Township.

Spokesperson Meaghan Kreeft says they'll begin clearing a large area of land just south of their existing Corunna site this month.

"This includes the removal of trees, topsoil and other vegetation and activities will begin in mid-September," says Kreeft. "Residents can expect equipment to be visible in the fields and intermittent noise and construction and vehicle traffic is anticipated."

Kreeft says the Sarnia-Lambton area remains the base case for a new plant, estimated to cost $2-billion, with an announcement on a final investment decision still expected this year.

Residents have until Thursday to submit their comments on an environmental assessment study of improvements to the Hwy. 40 corridor, needed to support the potential expansion.

Upgrades would include lengthening both the existing southbound left turn lanes at Petrolia Line and Rokeby Line and widening the intersection radius at the southeast corner of Hwy. 40 and Rokeby Line.
