Nine drivers were charged with failing to stop for school buses in Sarnia last year.
The Sarnia Police Service is hoping that statistic isn't repeated or surpassed this school year.
Constable John Sottosanti is reminding motorists to slow down and use extra caution when they see the big yellow vehicles.
"Once a school bus has come to a stop, its lights have been activated and the stop sign is out all vehicles must come to a stop within a safe distance -- about 20 meters," says Sottosanti.
He says failure to slow down and obey school bus signals will result in a fine of nearly $500 and six demerit points.
Sottosanti says school bus drivers are instructed to take down as much information as possible on any vehicles that don't stop.
"They will get your license plate, a description of the driver and of the vehicle and they will further that information onto the police and we will investigate it and determine what course of action to take from there."
Motorists are also asked to watch for students walking or biking to school and using cross walks.
"A vehicle is not allowed to enter the intersection, or area where the crossing guard is operating, until the crossing guard and children have fully cleared the street."
Sottosanti says disobeying a crossing guard stop sign carries a fine of $180 and three demerit points.
Students within the Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic District School Boards return to class Tuesday, September 5.
