Full-Time Inspector Needed At Twin Creeks

Warwick Township's mayor hopes to hear by month's end whether a full-time provincial inspector will be on site at the Twin Creeks Landfill near Watford.

Waste Management has applied to increase the amount of trash it can accept from 750,000 tonnes to 1.4-million tonnes annually.

Mayor Todd Case calls the inspector an insurance policy to ensure the site on Zion Line is run safely and cleanly.

"If approval is granted, Twin Creeks will become one of the biggest landfills in all of Canada," says Case. "It will have a big impact on our municipality. It will potentially result in more odour issues, dust and noise that comes from running a bigger site. There could be up to 20 trucks going there each and every day."

Case says Waste Management supports the hiring of a full-time inspector who would be paid by the province.

"We're taking all the risks for other large municipalities in their ability to deal with their waste that's coming to rural Ontario. We feel very strongly that the ministry should show due diligence and pay and provide for a full-time inspector," he says.

There had been a full-time inspector on site up until two years ago when the ministry decided on once-monthly inspections to adhere to provincial policy.
