The Sarnia Sting have hired former team goalie Cory Campbell as the club's new goaltending coach.
The 36-year-old Stratford native played a total of 176 Ontario Hockey League games split between the Sting, Belleville Bulls, Guelph Storm, and Windsor Spitfires.
In his rookie season with the Belleville Bulls, Campbell took over the starter’s position as a 17-year-old and led his team to an OHL Championship.
After retiring from professional hockey, Campbell joined the GOJHL’s Stratford Cullitons and served as their Goaltending Coach from 2007-2009.
Since 2010, he has been working with the Huron Perth Lakers (Alliance AAA) as an Organizational Goaltending Consultant.
Campbell says he's excited for the opportunity.
"I'm thrilled about joining the Sting, a team that I spent some time with during my junior career and a city that I loved playing in," he says. "I can’t wait to start this new chapter with my former club and being a part of a team atmosphere again. I'm definitely looking forward to working with the crop of young talent the Sting have in their system and helping these goalies develop over the years."
Sting GM Nick Sinclair says Campbell will be a great addition.
"We're excited to be able to add Cory to our group today. Cory is going to be a great addition to the team and will help not only our current goaltenders, but our goaltending prospects work towards reaching their potential," says Sinclair. "His experience as an Ontario Hockey League goaltender and his passion for player development make Cory a great fit for this role."
Sinclair says former goalie coach Patrick Desrochers is stepping back from the club this season due to family obligations but he'll still be involved with the team in a different, unspecified capacity.
The Sting kick off the regular season in Guelph on September 22 and will host Kitchener in their home opener the following night.
