Since the late 1990's, the Civic holiday in Sarnia has been known as Alexander Mackenzie Day in recognition of Canada's second Prime Minister.
Mackenzie was born in Scotland in 1822 before moving to Port Sarnia in 1845 where his brother was already living.
He served as the country’s first Liberal Prime Minister from 1874 to 1878.
Over his term as Prime Minister, Mackenzie was instrumental in implementing the secret ballot, Royal Military College, the Office of the Auditor General, and the Supreme Court.
He died in 1892 and is buried at Lakeview Cemetery in Sarnia.
There are many local references to Mackenzie including Alexander Mackenzie High School, and a monument at the foot of George St.
