The federal Liberal government is doing its part to help protect endangered Butler's garter snakes in the area.
They've given Aamjiwnaang First Nation just over $176,000 over three years to identify and mitigate threats caused by urban and industrial development near their habitat.
Sarnia-Lambton Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu says the Habitat Stewardship Program Species at Risk Stream project is a great initiative.
"It's really an investigation of what can be done to promote this particular snake in that habitat," says Gladu. "As you know, the Aamjiwnaang are very good stewards of the land. They've been doing a lot of work in the conservation area and with respect to endangered species and restoring flora and fauna."
Gladu says Aamjiwnaang is listed as a "priority area" within the Carolinian Forest Zone because of its biodiversity value.
In the meantime, Gladu is still waiting to hear how much funding Sarnia-Lambton will get for Great Lakes cleanup and restoration.
The federal government has a total $80-million set aside.
