Young Gymnasts Among Canada's Best

The Bluewater Gymnastics Club is a busy place this week as some of the country's best gymnasts are in town for national team camps.

There's also a local connection as well, as two members of the gym were selected to the youth national team.

Rachael Riley, a Grade 7 student at Gregory A. Hogan Catholic School, says she's exciting to be joined by one of her best friends Jovie Richardson, who recently finished grade six at P.E. McGibbon Public School.

Richardson, who has been doing gymnastics for eight years, says it makes it a bit more special to share the experience with one of her best friends.

"I was really happy to make the team, and I get to compete with my teammate and good friend Rachael," says Richardson.

Riley, who first started gymnastics at the age of three, is also happy to have her friend along for the ride.

"We've been training for a while together so I see her almost everyday, we're always cheering each other on," says Riley.

The two gymnasts have a good opportunity to rub shoulders with some of the sport's top athletes with several Olympians in town as part of Gymnastics Canada camps.

Riley says she enjoys seeing the top athletes, but has grown quite familiar with them during their previous visits to the gym.

"It is pretty cool, but we've had them here before so I've met them. It was pretty cool to see them go to the Olympics after meeting them," says Riley.

Ellie Black and Brittany Rogers headline the list of senior athletes in Sarnia this week, both competed in the London and Rio Olympics.

Both Riley and Richardson qualified for the Canadian Championships last year, and hope to compete in the Olympics one day as well.

Here is video of Jovie working on her vault, it was posted online by the Bluewater Gymnastics Club.
