Local Fan Donates To Arena Project

City of Sarnia staff are thanking a city man for his committment of time, energy, and funds to the Sarnia Arena Revitalization Project.

The arena, which opened back in 1947, is undergoing over $1-million in renovations.

Parks and Rec Director Rob Harwood says longtime Legionnaires fan Robert Christopher, who is in a wheelchair, has been instrumental in making the facility more accessible.

"Now that there are different mobility devices being used by others, there are more challenges in there," says Harwood. "For instance, to get into the men's washroom, the widths are right but to maneuver around the wall was very difficult for Robert. The new washroom will be a drive straight in, it'll have the proper automatic door opener and all of the devices that are necessary to make it a good experience for him."

Harwood says roof work has already been completed. Other improvements will include the installation of LED lighting, new heating and sound systems, and concessions.

A $490,000 public fundraising campaign is at over $172,000.

The other two-thirds of the cost is coming from the city's 2017 parks and rec capital budget and the federal government through the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program.

Those who wish to donate can visit www.sarnia.ca. The work must be completed by March 31, 2018.
