City Mourns Sudden Loss Of Engineer

The City of Sarnia is mourning the sudden loss of its city engineer.

A city hall news release says 41-year-old Andre Morin died Tuesday evening due to natural causes.

Sarnia Councillor Anne Marie Gillis says they're shocked.

"City hall is reeling right now after learning about the death of Andre Morin, who was a very, very good employee, and only wanted the best for the city," says Gillis. "I remember when Andre first came to the city, he was hired shortly after I was first elected. I found he was always a very positive person, he was certainly a pivotal piece to the success of the city."

Chief Administrative Officer Margaret Misek-Evans says it's a tragic loss for the city.

"Andre was a very generous and kind person, he put people first, and he was helpful to everyone in the city's family. He loved the city and did his best to serve the citizens of Sarnia," she says.

Originally from Welland, Ontario, Morin came to the city as engineering manager in August of 2004 and advanced to the position of city engineer in February 2011. He took on the additional role of acting city manager in January of 2016.

The flag at city hall is at half-mast.

Family and friends will be received at Smith Funeral Home on Saturday from 4pm until 7pm, and Sunday from 2pm until 4pm.

A memorial mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Church at 1465 LeCaron Ave. on Monday at 10am.

Sympathy may be expressed through donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Big Brothers of Sarnia-Lambton, or Huron House Boys Home.

The city says all municipal buildings and facilities will be open Monday but there will be limited services between 9:30am and noon to allow staff to attend the funeral.
