Kendall-Brunt Inquest Begins In Toronto

An inquest that gets underway in Toronto Tuesday, will look into the deaths of two men who died in very similar circumstances, while taking part in firefighter cold water rescue training.

A 51-year-old veteran Point Edward firefighter, Gary Kendall, died in January of 2010 while training on the St Clair.

Five years later, 30-year-old Durham College firefighting student Adam Brunt of Bowmanville lost his life in a similar training exercise in the Saugeen River east of Walkerton.

The village of Point Edward was fined $75,000 under the Occupational Health and Safety Act for failing to take precautions to protect a worker.

Herschel Rescue Training Systems conducted the training in both incidents.

The inquest is expected to last two weeks and hear from as many as 18 witnesses.
