Aamjiwnaang Begins Process Of Self Government

Aamjiwnaang First Nation has taken the first step towards self-government.

Acting Band Council Clerk Lynn Rosales says they've developed their own Constitution with input from the community.

"The development of the Aamjiwnaang Chi'Naagknigewin, our community Constitution, is a small step towards embracing our inherent right to be self-governing and to work towards being self sustaining, and really taking care of the needs of our community" she says. "There's a law-making process included, governing principles for Chief and council, a community consultation process, rules for financial administration, as well as values and principals for staff."

A chief and council signing ceremony will be held at the Maawn Doosh Gumig Community and Youth Centre beginning at 5pm April 11.
