City Council Considers Body Rub Bylaw Approval

Sarnia council is being asked to endorse the proposed body rub parlour bylaw Monday.

The public was given 21 days to provide comments on the draft after it was presented during council's February 27 meeting.

Mayor Mike Bradley says no comments were received.

"I think that most people understand that this is to protect the community, to protect the people working there, given the fact that the courts have said that we can not eliminate these places in our communities," said Bradley. "While the city does not have the right to eliminate these places, the city does have the right to control them."

Mayor Bradley says the bylaw, requested by the Sarnia Police Service, includes heavy restrictions on the internal and external operation of body rub parlours.

"This is a bylaw that really puts so many restrictions on these operations -- if they do get out of line, action can be taken."

The bylaw hasn't been updated since it was created in 1976.

"Society is changing, the internet has changed a lot of things that are happening in this world and eventually I believe these (establishments) won't be in existence."

Much of the research for the update was provided by Detective Sergeant John Pearce of the Sarnia Police Criminal Investigation Branch.
