City Receives $1.7M For Public Transit Improvements

Sarnia Transit users will notice a number of improvements in the near future.

The federal government has allocated $1.8-billion in idle infrastructure money to a regional express rail project around the GTA and millions more for smaller transit projects around Ontario.

Locally, over $1.7-million has been allocated for public transit.

The funding will go toward the purchase of eight low floor specialty cutaway buses, two low floor Nova Buses and two replacement Care-A-Vans for the city.

Sarnia-Lambton Conservative MP Marilyn Gladu says the money will also help with a number of accessibility improvements at Sarnia Transit, including the installation of 240 concrete pads for accessible bus stops.

"I'm always pleased and surprised when Sarnia is on the map because I do my best to make sure people know what our needs are and that we're not forgotten when money is being handed out," says Gladu. "It's another fine example to be able to work across parties to be able to do something great for the community."

As well, a total of 174 cameras will be installed on 29 city buses.
