Intense Texas Low Bringing Significant Rain

An intense, moisture laden Texas low will spread significant rainfall across southwestern Ontario Thursday and Friday.

Environment Canada's special weather statement remained in effect at noon Thursday.

Meteorologist Geoff Coulson says mixed precipitation in Sarnia-Lambton Thursday morning will become straight rain as the temperature rises.

"If we do add up the amounts that are being forecast, we could have some areas ending up with over 35 mm of rain from the system," says Coulson. "Lots of moisture associated with it. It's taking its time moving through the lower lakes area and that's why we're going to be dealing with precipitation through today and for pretty much all of the day on Friday."

There is the risk of thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening but Coulson is not anticipating severe weather here.

"It looks like any severe thunderstorm activity would be restricted to areas down through Ohio and Indiana. The colder conditions that we have over Lake Erie, those waters over Lake Erie right now act as a break in terms of the stronger storms, but certainly there is still a possibility through the course of this afternoon (Thurs) and this evening that we may get some lightning activity in southwestern Ontario."

Freezing rain warnings were issued Thursday morning for areas including Listowel, Milverton, Kitchener, and Guelph as well as further north into the Owen Sound region.
