Tundra Swans Arrive In North Lambton

Thousands of tundra swans arrived at the Thedford Bog behind the Lambton Heritage Museum in Grand Bend Wednesday morning.

Museum spokesperson Gwen Watson says a couple of hundred swans visited in January, but when the colder weather and snow came they left and haven't been seen for a few weeks.

"There are several thousand," said Watson. "They're scattered across the field, so I would recommend that people definitely bring binoculars with them. Some are sitting fairly close to the road this morning, but their are quite a few further back in the fields as well."

Watson says the swans can be seen off Greenway Rd., which is County Rd. #5, just north of the museum.

Each year the tundra swans migrate some 6,500 km from the US east coast to their breeding grounds in the Canadian Arctic.

They rest and feed for two or three weeks in the Thedford bog area.

The museum's "Return of the Swans" festival will be held March 11 to April 2.
