Filip Helt scored twice, but the Sarnia Sting's struggling defence resulted in their 8-4 loss to the Rangers in Kitchener Sunday afternoon.
The Rangers scored six second period goals to put the game way out of reach for the Sting, who currently sit in third place in the OHL West Division with 56 points.
Since overage defenceman and captain Kevin Spinozzi began serving a ten-game suspension, Sarnia has lost four of five games and has given up 29 goals.
Helt did score the first goal of the game, his third of the year at 9:09 in the first period. The score was 1-0 Sarnia until the 15th second of the second period, when Kitchener's Greg Meireles put the puck in to tie it up. Helt got Sarnia the lead back, briefly, at 7:49 in the second with his second goal of the game. The Rangers then scored four unanswered goals, from in order, Dylan Di Perna, Frank Hora, Joseph Garreffa and Meireles once again. By the time Sarnia's Sean Josling scored at 17:11 in the second, the score was 5-3 Kitchener. Garreffa did sneak in an insurance goal before the second intermission for a 6-3 Rangers lead.
The Rangers added two more in the third period, with Connor Bunnaman scoring at 2:13, then Eric Guest lighting the lamp over four minutes later. Adam Ruzicka gave Sarnia another goal on the power play with less than two minutes left in the game.
The Sting returns to Progressive Auto Sales Arena Wednesday night to host the Guelph Storm.
