Lambton College is giving back to the community as the campus celebrates its golden anniversary this year.
Sarnia Council accepted a Legacy Project Donation from the college at it's meeting Monday.
"2016 and 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of Lambton College in the County of Lambton and the City of Sarnia," says Vice-President of Student Success and Campus Services Rob Kardas. "We are deeply aware that our college would not be where it is, or what it is, without our community, and as such, we are celebrating our legacy and thanking our community for 50 years of support on April 5, 2017."
Kardas says all staff and students will either participate in community or legacy based projects throughout the city or the county that day.
"We anticipate there will be about 3,000 people, celebrating and giving back to those who've built this college," he says.
Kardas says 50 white birch trees will be planted behind a new concrete bench and steel legacy sculpture at the “Point Lands” location near the Sydney Smith Dock.
Words inscribed on the sculpture will representing the colleges relationship with the city; innovation, success, perseverance, passion and diversity.
While the project in Sarnia will be the largest, each municipality in Lambton County will also receive a donation of ten trees and a sculpture.
Sarnia councillors collectively thanked Lambton College for the gift.
"I think what I like the best is the tie between each of the federation partners of Lambton County, to your home base in terms of where the college is actually located," says Councillor Bev MacDougall. "As a resident of Sarnia, I am very grateful that you chose to put this at our Point Lands, where boaters and visitors who come by water can make the tie of this sculpture, and this grove, to our community college."
MacDougall described the project as a win-win for the community and awesome way to celebrate 50 years.
