The Parks and Recreation Department is recommending Sarnia City Council approve an agreement with the Canada150 Community Infrastructure Program for the rehabilitation of Sarnia Arena.
The federal government has approved 33% of the funding or $491,000, but an equal amount must be raised from a public fundraising drive, with the final third of the $1.4-million cost coming from the 2017 approved Parks and Recreation Capital budget.
Parks and Recreation Director Rob Harwood says they're pursuing other avenues of funding, adding the repairs are badly needed.
"We are looking at such things such as improved lighting, roofing and facade repairs, a family accessible washroom, accessible concessions, some renovations to the lobby area, as well as the sound system," says Harwood.
Bluewater Power has already contributed $87,000 toward the LED lighting component of the project.
The work must be completed by March 31, 2018.
