'Ollie' Says Six More Weeks Of Winter

"Oil Springs Ollie" says we're in for six more weeks of winter.

The furry weather forecaster saw his shadow at 8:10am Thursday morning, and relayed that message to principal Chad Brown outside of Brigden Public School in St. Clair Township.

Even though it wasn't the news many were hoping for, Brown says the students were looking forward to meeting the groundhog.

"That's what were really focusing on after the ceremony, we're having two assemblies at the school, one to talk about the animals and another to talk about the wildlife rescue and what it is they do," says Brown.

Peggy Jenkins of Heaven's Wildlife Rescue says Ollie will visit with students at the school after his busy morning.

"It's a great opportunity to kind of educate the younger crowd, not just about groundhog day but wildlife in general and it helps to get the word out that we're here when someone needs us," says Jenkins.

Jenkins says this is the fourth year the groundhog has made a prediction.

Last year, Ollie was one of the few groundhogs to successfully predict and early spring.

Not to be overshadowed, Ollie disagreed with his counterparts in Wiarton and Nova Scotia who both emerged this Groundhog Day without seeing their shadows.

Pennsylvania's Punxsutawney Phil did see his shadow, predicting another six weeks of winter.

Jenkins says you can email [email protected] to apply to have Ollie visit your school next year.
