Prescription Pads Stolen From Abandoned Hospital

City police have arrested a woman after prescription pads were stolen from the abandoned Sarnia General Hospital site.

Constable John Sottosanti says the investigation began earlier this month after paperwork was left in a taxi.

"On January 10, 2017, members of the Sarnia Police Service Criminal Investigation Branch were handed over a number of old pharmaceutical prescription pads," says Sottosanti. "The pads had been left behind in a cab by a female fare and it was determined the pads were stolen from 220 Mitton St. N, the former hospital site, and the investigation was able to determine the accused was 30-year-old Laura Dennis of no fixed address."

Sottosanti says Dennis was arrested January 17, 2017 and charged with possession of property obtained by crime, break and enter, breach of probation and failing to comply with recognizance. She remained in police custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Sottosanti says police contacted Bluewater Health about the stolen documents and hospital administration assisted in the investigation.

Bluewater Health, in an e-mail to BlackburnNews.com, says the stolen property includes obsolete prescription pads from physicians, dating from 1999 to 2006.

The hospital says despite an exhaustive effort to remove all items related to operations prior to vacating the property, a number of booklets remained.

The hospital says a team recently conducted a complete sweep of the Mitton St. site to ensure the facility is clear of any other items.

Bluewater Health says they're committed to quality and safety, and to working with the City of Sarnia to redevelop the property to realize its potential.
