A Sarnia-Lambton delegation heads to Taiwan next month with its sights set on having this area named to the prestigious Intelligent Community Top7.
Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership General Manager George Mallay says this is the next big step after being recognized as a Smart21 Community in 2016.
"The process has really identified the range of things happening in our community, both within government, the private sector and through the education and research system around our community in terms of advancing it though the use of technology," says Mallay.
Mallay says the designation would advance the community globally.
"There's also a great opportunity to learn from other communities, to learn from other companies, in terms of how they are deploying technology and using technology to move their communities forward."
The designation is awarded by the Intelligent Community Forum, a global network of cities and regions whose mission is to help communities use information and communications technology to create inclusive prosperity, tackle social and governance challenges and enrich their quality of life.
Lambton County Warden Bill Weber, Lambton County CAO Ron Van Horne, Lambton County Information Technology Manager Robert Wilks, City of Sarnia Economic Development Director Peter Hungerford and Lambton College's Dean of Applied Research & Innovation Dr. Mehdi Sheikhzadeh will join Mallay on the trip.
The delegation will be in Taipei from February 3-11.
The Top7 will move on to compete for the title of Intelligent Community of the Year, to be announced this June in New York.
