The Sarnia Legionnaires (17-17-0-1) earned a hard fought 5-2 win over the visiting London Nationals (24-8-1-0) in GOJHL play Thursday night.
The victory snaps the Legionnaires nine-game losing streak and gives them 35 points on the season, good for fifth in the Western Conference.
After a scoreless first period, Liam Fordy opened the scoring for London just 2:46 into the second. Brett Storr tied the game with a powerplay goal, and Joey Zappa made it 2-1 Legionnaires shortly after.
Kyle Dawson pulled the Nationals back even early in the third frame, but Yianni Skropolis, and Curtis Egert scored just 1:40 apart to give Sarnia a 4-2 lead. Ben Schoch sealed the win with an empty netter.
Corunna's Josh Barraclough picked up his first assist as a Legionnaire after being acquired from the Chatham Maroons for future considerations.
The game was chippy throughout with both teams combining for 21 penalties.
Legionnaires goalie Jorgen Johnson made 40 saves on 42 shots against, while Cameron Zanussi stopped 19 shots in the London crease.
The Legionnaires return to action Thursday, January 12 against the LaSalle Vipers at the Brock St. Barn on CHOK.
