Charges Laid After Fake Fentanyl Patches Turned In

A Sarnia man is facing a drug trafficking charge after a number of fake fentanyl patches were returned to a local pharmacy.

The Sarnia Police Service says officers were contacted back on May 25, 2016, after the fake patches were returned by a patient as part of the pharmacy's “Patch for Patch” program. Police say the phoney patches did not contain any form of a controlled substance, and were made out of two-ply packing tape.

Following an investigation it was discovered that 20 fake fentanyl patches in total were returned to the pharmacy. The estimated street value of 20 patches is around $2,200.

On December 30, 2016, a 48-year-old Sarnia man was arrested and charged with trafficking a controlled substance.

His name has not been released.

The local fentanyl patch return program requires users of the drug to exchange used patches before getting new ones, to curb abuse and illicit sale of the potent drug.
