Task Force Releases Recommendations For Healthy Living

The Lambton County Community Food Assessment Task Force has unveiled ten recommendations to promote healthy local food.

The action items were presented at a news conference at Sarnia's Farmers Market.

Lambton Public Health Nutritionist Lana Smith says their goal is to ensure all county residents have access, knowledge and skills to eat healthy and local food.

Smith says one recommendation focuses on educating students.

"It specifically addresses healthy foods in the school, and it was important to connect with the school boards to make sure they were in support of the actions being proposed," says Smith. "The school boards are critical."

Other recommendations include increasing the availability of local and healthy food and decreasing the number of residents who have inadequate access because of financial restraints.

The recommendations are the second phase of a Community Food Assessment.

Smith says stakeholders must continue to collaborate across the food system to mobilize change and transform their vision into a reality.

"There's 25 stakeholders who were involved with giving input in the draft recommendations before we completed the report," says Smith. "It was very important for us to do that in order to mobilize the recommendations for action when they came out, so we had input before they were completed."
